“Thinking systemically becomes like inspecting the spider web pulling one thread of the web affects the other threads and anchors which then often affect the interconnected web as a whole”- Jodi Pfarr The Urgency of Awareness
Ensuring our most basic physiological needs of food, water and shelter becomes increasingly harder when one of the cogs on the wheel is not there. Even if we have them all, if it is of poor quality our sense of security decreases. While decreasing life expectancy and health status, housing instability creates increased health care expenditures, along with mortality and morbidity rates. Housing instability is a threat to society, not just those who are experiencing it.
There are many causes of housing instability, however in the Twin Cities, some causes we see affecting people are systemic such as income inequality, affordable housing, and unequal employment opportunities. We also know that housing instability can be caused by lack support for individuals experiencing issues with substance abuse, mental health disorders, and physical disabilities.
We understand that the prioritization of community partnerships, expansion of renter protections, increased affordable and accessible housing, while developing and implementing solutions is critical to fighting housing instability. Here at LOGO Community Supports Services we want to support community members with identifying barriers on an individual level while using our voices to lift up issues at a systemic level.
